While Theresa and I try to be pennywise, we try very hard not to be pound-foolish, especially when it comes to the exterior of our home.
Especially the entry doors, since your entry door is something you experience every day—and multiple times a day. So you want it to be right. You want it to reflect your style. You want a door that’s easy to maintain. And it has to be affordable.
And, so do we.
We’re planning to replace both our front and back entry doors. We’ve weighed trying to reuse the original doors to keep some of our 100-year-old home’s charm, but they just aren’t efficient and sadly they no longer fit inside the door openings.
For several months, it’s been a lot of husband-and-wife discussions about what kind of door to choose, and we’ve finally decided to use Therma-Tru doors.
Not only will the new doors keep the charm of our American Foursquare, they’ll make our home more energy efficient, saving real money for years to come. And the door itself won’t cost as much because the Federal Government offers a tax break. The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act (H.R. 483) states homeowners are now eligible for a federal energy tax credit up to 10% of the cost of a new door (up to $500 for taxable year 2011).
I’m passionate about molding, so whenever there’s an opportunity to add trim, I’m ready. And since I love trim, I want the trim around the doors to last and look good doing it. (I can’t tell you how many wood door trims I’ve replaced over the years from water wicking up the end-grain.)
We’ve used Fypon PVC and urethane moldings for our remodeled porch and around windows in our home, and we’re planning to detail the new doors with Fypon, too.
For more detail and to see which doors qualify, visit Therma-Tru’s tax credit page.
And, we’ll post the how-to on our door replacement projects soon.
