6 Steps to NOT get ripped off by a home improvement or roofing contractor

A home improvement contractor or roofing contractor that’ll give you and your roof the attention it deserves—from color to kickin’ butt for the next 5-decades—is key to getting a home improvement you will love.

Use a home improvement contractor that will give you the roof you love,

Step 1—you can love your roof. Wait-what?!

Yes, your roof can be awesome; not just ‘there.’

It can be a smile waiting for you every day when you pull into the driveway. And a home improvement contractor that can give you the choice between ‘-meh’ and ‘more please!’ is the person you want working on your house.

Step 2—Because a roof can be a beautiful feature, it can increase the value of your home too. On the other hand, if you buy the same roof as your neighbor, well, not so much. A home improvement contractor that can speak knowledgeably about your home both as the place you live and as your biggest investment is worth his weight in shingles.

Step 3—Talk color, texture and style. If the dude can’t talk about anything but regular shingles and what day he can start, you might be wasting your time. For your house, you want someone who can help you get the best roof possible for your spirit and your budget. That person should also know, roughly, when the asphalt shingles typically installed on a house will start to stain and streak. (They almost surely will by the way).

Step 4—Check a referral site. A site like HomeAdvisor certifies, rates and reviews contractors. HomeAdvisor’s reviews come from actual customers and are not influenced by how much contractors ‘advertise’ behind the scenes.

Step 5—Check a manufacturer site. Companies like DaVinci Roofscapes have preferred installer programs—training—that contractors go through. If you contact a manufacturer that can guide you from contractor to color, and you don’t get sucked into the vortex of Goliath Co., that’s real value.

Step 6—Do the homework that everyone says to do; it’s important. Is the home improvement contractor insured? Licensed? And can you speak with a couple of happy customers?

If you start from a place of inspiration, you can end up inspired. And that’s more than just avoiding a rip off. That’s making life good.
