Decking Done Right

Mark trimming cedar deck boards

Here’s a MyFixitUpLife tip for installing deck boards.

Install deck boards a few inches (anywhere from, say, 3 to 12 inches) past the deck framing, then snap a line flush with the framing.

Position yourself so the body of the saw is on the deck side of your line and start cutting. Let the pieces fall as you cut.

For safety and accuracy, keep the saw moving and your body in position to see the line as you cut. Starting and stopping the saw every few feet often results in a not-so-smooth cut.

Tip: Set blade depth ¼ inch past the decking thickness, i.e. 1-3/4 inches for these 2×6 Western Red Cedar deck boards. This minimizes the risk of kerfing the framing if your line is a little off or the framing is cupped.

Fast and accurate. That’s decking done right.
