Energy-Efficient Roofing Upgrade: Part 3

In Parts 1 and 2 of this video series on how to give your roof an energy-efficient upgrade, Mark demonstrated how to prep your roof for the improvement. In this video, Mark installs the new energy-efficient underlayment and begins installation of the composite slate shingles.

Energy-Efficient Roof Upgrades

  1. Mark is using Grace’s Ice and Water Shield on the entire roof surface rather than just the eaves for two important reasons: The rubber membrane provides complete waterproofing, rather than just the water-resistance of roofing felt that’s commonly used by contractors.
  2. During the summer, your HVAC system works to reduce humidity inside your home; the added waterproofing the membrane offers should reduce the energy your system uses to do its job.

An added benefit is that the membrane should lessen the chances of ever having a roof leak. When installing the membrane:

  • Mark cuts it into 10 foot pieces on the ground for easier handling
  • Do not expose the adhesive backing until ready to install
  • Drip edge on your roof rakes should be installed over the membrane
  • Drip edge at the eaves should be covered by the underlayment

Mark is using DaVinci Roofscapes Composite Slate shingles as a roof covering because they’re attractive and Earth-friendly. The shingles are a sustainable building product and are 100 percent recyclable. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing the shingles, but a few quick tips:

  • Use blue chalk to mark your lines as it washes off the shingles
  • Maintain spacing between shingles
  • Start in a corner and work up and over
  • Maintain a 1 inch overhang at eaves and rakes

A beautiful and Earth-friendly roof was the goal of the project and Mark achieved it by using roofing products that can make your home more energy-efficient. The materials may be a little more expensive than those many homeowners use, but the potential energy savings and 50-year warranty may more than cover the additional costs.
