Taking selfies might seem self-indulgent and narcissistic, but there’s so much more happening.
I’ve learned a few things through taking selfies that might be hard to discover from just looking at others’ selfies.
When I’ve scrolled through Twitter or Facebook and I see a friend’s face pop up in a selfie photo, I used to crinkle my nose a bit. It’s enough that we share what we’re doing, everything from eating a cookie to getting a root canal, but turning the camera on your own face kind of weirded me out.
Until someone took a selfie with me.
A lightbulb went off.
Selfies are like having a mixologist at a party. It’s instant smiles and funny faces.
There’s something that happens to connect people through a selfie photoshoot that just doesn’t happen in other kinds of situations. Parties can be awkward if you don’t know anyone. But if someone starts taking selfies of the partygoers, it’s easy to jump into the mix and share your hilarious funny face or over-the-top serious pose.
So now I’m hooked.
Let’s bond over a selfie the next time we meet up.
