Will Millennials ever move out of their old bedroom or parents’ basements? Do they, as Generation Y, have a chance moving-on-up like their parents did? Or is it perpetual adolescence for those born between 1980 and 2000?

Super designer Courtney Rogers—herself a celebrated Milennial as part of the National Kitchen and Bath Association‘s illustrious 30 under 30 and Remodeling Magazine’s 40 under 40—is designing for Milennials and sees them not McMansion-ing, but instead, moving where the action is. Is the formal dining room going away? How about gone?

Millennials prefer the more open floor plan. They also prefer a blend of warm residential and tougher industrial looks. Their homes tend to be smaller and take up a larger chunk of their income than their parents’ homes, so storage is important too.

They also choose neighborhoods not for their keep-up-with-the-Jones’ wide streets and cul-de-sacs but they tend to move to edgier, more social neighborhoods. Milennials—the generation that starts designs with a Pinterest page and can say how awesome or awful a design is to millions in seconds—are looking for streamlined looks and homes that can be lived in.

“I’m a passionate, driven, and supremely organized over-achiever who loves my family, my Georgia Bulldawgs, and my creative outlet… design,” –Courtney Rogers
