Before You Begin: Planning
It’s easy but frustrating to first make a space and then try to fit everything in it. Before you start to build-out your workshop, list all of the things you’d like to include. What are the big tools that need permanent set-up space? Do you have an addiction to keeping cut-offs for the just-in-case moments that pop up? How will you manage bits and blades? By thinking through all of the things involved with our workshop guide, you’ll be able to create a space that suits you and your projects.
Workshop Ideas and Inspo
It’s an essential space for all DIYers and professionals. The workshop of your dreams is probably super specific for the type of projects you enjoy and plan to do. We think it’s helpful to browse ideas from others so you can think through all of the organization opportunities and storage needs for tools and supplies. And think about the horizontal work space you’ll need, too.
Workshop Materials
Some like a pristine finished space that’s like a laboratory, and others—like us—are fine with a rustic set-up. We know dust happens and we clean it up at the end of the day, but we are ok with unfinished walls and ceilings. Think about the work surfaces, the hooks, drawers, and cabinets that make the most sense for how you work.
Workshop How-To
Workshops are fun to create. We’re in the process of planning our dream workshop and plan to build it later this year. Check out our workshop how-to articles to help get you started, and come back later for our detailed how-tos after we’ve built ours.
Workshop Videos
We’ll have detailed videos of how to outfit a workshop when we’re done building our workshop. In the meanwhile, we have a handful of storage and organization videos that can help you customize your space.
DIY or Ask a Pro
If you are updating part of a garage or shed with shelves, hooks, and a worktop, then you likely can DIY your workshop. However, if you want a freestanding structure in your backyard or want to build an addition for your new workshop, a qualified residential remodeling contractor can bring structure to chaos by offering expertise and practical solutions when things don’t go as expected.
We have experience handling structural surprises behind old walls, appliance compatibility issues, and design elements that don’t always work out as planned.
