A dozen donuts on the wall seemed like the perfect art project for this episode of ‘Save My Bakery’ on Food Network.
Bringing in a little whimsy and celebrating Phatso’s Bakery’s food through art, I wanted to make a donut wall. A dozen oversized pretty donuts in a crisp white box.
Let’s step back for a second. So the fun part about designing for a Food Network show where the owner of the bakery doesn’t have a say in the design: I have an opportunity let my imagination run wild. And create donut wall art.
But how do you make large-scale donuts that can hang on the wall? I thought about many ways to go about creating a dozen 12-inch diameter donuts. A pool noodle? Too perfectly round. Dough? It hardens eventually. But it takes more than our 48-hour deadline. And it would weigh a lot.
I settled on expanding spray foam for these donuts. After carving them into the perfect shape, I covered them in joint compound, painted each and decorated my little donut beauties.
While working on the donuts, I realized that I could have taken a cue from ‘Save My Bakery‘ host Kerry Vincent and used a styrofoam cake form. Those cake forms are the perfect shape. Just need a little bit of carving and some caulk to create the donut-like frosted texture.
