Ask it: How to install tile backer board

Hey MyFixitUpLife—I have a question about how to install tile backer board. Can you help?

How to install tile backer board properly? Avoid voids.

Question: I know, generally, how to install tile but I could use an assist. I’m putting down backer board for a tile floor in our kitchen and want to make sure I apply the thinset properly. To fill the voids between the subfloor and the backer board, should I skim coat (use the flat trowel edge)? Or use use the teeth to ‘notch’ the thinset. Thanks. –John

Answer: John, the answer is yes and yes.

Avoiding voids is the way to go when it comes to how to install tile properly.

Glop the thinset on your subfloor. I usually use a margin trowel to get it out of the bucket and onto the floor. Then, spread it around the work area with the flat edge of the trowel. Using the flat edge packs voids like plywood joints or knots. And this helps develop a strong bond between the thinset and subfloor, which is crucial.

Next, comb out the thinset mortar with the notched side of the trowel and set the backer board into it. Fasten the backer according to manufacturer instructions.

Tip: Don’t screed the mud so thin you can’t then comb out full notches.

Good luck!

Thanks MyFixitUpLife! New tile in our kitchen is done and done!

  • One last question, I’ve noticed on a few other blogs/reviews that a lot of people get the tools free from the manufacturer to review. Will you tell me how I too can participate in that?

  • Very efficiently written information. It will be beneficial to anybody who utilizes it, including me. Keep up the good work. For sure i will check out more posts.
