Bag vs. Mulch

Back in the day when I started in the whole home improvement gig, I did it behind a lawn mower.

In those days, mulching mowers didn’t exist. We bagged grass — there was no shooting it out the side into a heap. And the lawns looked super-crisp. Even now, with mulching mowers all the rage — bagging still makes sense. Here’s why:

First of all, you get a cleaner cut, faster cut by bagging. If you stripe your lawn, you’ll get a crisper stripe by bagging. There are fewer “scragglies” that the mower blade misses. On a bagger, the mower’s efficiency is focused on cutting the grass once — rather than a billion times chopping it into mulch. If you let your lawn go (like if you’re on vacation) bagging it will give you the buzz-cut you’re looking for. Try and mulch it, and you’ll have to mow it twice for the same results — at least.
