Black interior design can be swoon-worthy and indulgently luxe.

Used thoughtfully, black interior design can be luxurious and powerful.

A dark painted wall is a luscious backdrop to a velvet sofa, black and white flooring. The abundance of plants helps give the feeling of a sumptuous interior.

If you are shy about using black or other seriously saturated colors in your home, I’m here to help give you the tips that can make black work for you.

The most important part of using a black interior design or an exterior design is to use it thoughtfully and with intention. That means that it can’t be an afterthought. We all stumble upon those ‘happy accidents’ that just miraculously work. It’s less likely to happen when working with bold colors or patterns.

So what does designing with intention actually mean? What are the steps? It’s easy.

Just think about the material, and whether the material is a rich material or reads as cheap. In some colors and patterns, and otherwise seeming inexpensive material can be elevated by the color or pattern. Black is a tougher color. So stick with materials that seduce you into touching them: fur, leather, and furnishings that have tufting or embellished with metallics.

I’ve been ogling several black interior design images on Pinterest, and gathered them below to share what I’m liking about each.

Clean and simple, the black ceiling in this little space helps make a very tall ceiling feel a bit more cozy and casual.
A black ceiling in a white kitchen is a fun contrast that picks up on a few of the black accents in the appliances and shelving.
A black entry door with an articulated lite surround feels elegant and slightly dainty.
This shows that black can work in a nursery. With the wood floor, blond wood crib, and fun collection of wall art, the black wall becomes a backdrop rather than a focal.
A black bathtub is crisp inside a mostly white bathroom.
Darker colors on the walls and floor are enhanced by the darker colors of furnishings. The metallic lighting and mirror elevate the room from somber into sophisticated.
Black patterns are a fun way to use the color.
Black ceiling, black flooring, and black-and-white walls are made even more special with the gold details in the sink and lighting. The pop of green give the bathroom even more personality.
This is a room I want. The details walls in a rich green pairs with the deeply hued sofa and flooring. The room is more mysterious with the lighting choice.
