FixitUp Find: Bosch 1677MD Worm Drive Saw

I’m an East Coast guy. Knowing that, the basic tool-nut might infer that I came up using a sidewinder circular saw — that light, right-blade, direct-drive deal — and he’d be right.

Years ago when my sidewinder started wearing out, I looked for a replacement and investigated worm drives. I picked one up at the tool store and immediately put it down. Fifteen-plus pounds of saw stuck way out on the end of a handle was only good for making you tired, I thought. No dice.

Little did I know that when I was framing, the way that I cut boards was actually screaming for a worm drive.
