Cherries have been popping up as a fun pop of red in fashion. But it’s not just for wearing. The buoyant red fruit is also a playful way to add some color and whimsy to a modern or transitional interior design scheme. Here are some ways to cherry pick your way through the options and create your own cherry home decor plans. Cherry dreams can come true.
The search for cherry home decor
After diving into the cherry home design search, I’ve emerged happy that so many creatives are making cherry objects for everyday home use. I am surprised there aren’t more options for cherry chairs or cherry lighting, especially affordable options. For example, the cherry lighting above is more than $600.
Still, the cherry pillows are less than $20 and the pet bowls are about $30 right now. We’ve been using the cherry toilet brush for more than a year, and it’s a charming way to add some fun to a spot that’s usually so boring and practical. And it works just as well as any other toilet brush we’ve used.
Exercise restraint
While you can do whatever you want at your house, because it’s your house, I caution you to exercise restraint when embracing a playful theme. Yes, you can find cherry blankets, wallpaper, and cherry tiles and more, when you make everything into the theme, the theme explodes into a cartoon-like environment. (Now, if living in Pee-wee’s Playhouse was a dream, then go for it. Live like a cartoon.)
Choose items wisely and thoughtfully. Make sure there’s enough space and quiet elements around each pop of playfulness. For a rule of thumb, one playful item per vignette–what you can capture in a photo–is usually plenty to serve a theme. Or else the room may start feel like it’s screaming CHERRIES at you. And nobody can relax in a bossy room.
Don’t worry about usefulness.
The resin cherry has no particular use other than to delight and add some charm. It’s just part of my cherry dreams for a fun interior. So I say if it speaks to you and makes you feel good, then it’s a useful purchase. Those intangibles pleasures that home decor can provide are what elevates a space from being just fine to being a home.
It’s your space.
Don’t worry about what others–beyond your household members–think when you are creating your spaces. You aren’t creating your home for someone who doesn’t live there. Your home is a place where you can relax, feel like yourself, and rejuvenate your spirit.
When it’s a shared space…
Now, for those of us who share a home with other humans, we need to consider their mojo and vibe when we redecorate and redesign our homes. Some may divide the rooms so each human is the decision-maker about a different space. Others may allow one person to be captain of color and another to be captain of material. Some of us narrow down selections to a top 3 so the other person can make the final call among our vetted choices.
It’s essential to figure out what’s important to each of you, and then graciously let go of the reins so they can thrive in their design power. Here are some tips on how to update a home with your partner.
