So here’s not my favorite job: scraping paint and coatings and repainting them. But to underestimate the importance of a proper paint job is to ruin the works underneath it if you ask me. Paint is what people see.
This means that the work starts with prepping the surface beneath the old paint–something unavoidable, especially in older homes. It’s especially unavoidable with moldings that have convex surfaces you need to get a blade into. What’s more, lots of contractors and DIYers start by sanding these elements. Problem is sanding rarely does much at this stage except waste sandpaper. The way I’ve found that works best is to take a scraper blade to the work, then sand it out second.
