Way back when, portable table saws used to be two things: small and (follow me now) portable.
Around 2002 that changed. The class heavied-up, borrowing features — smartly — from their larger brethren, contractor saws. The heretofore small bore tools grew: Table size, rip capacity and fence features increased. They stored gear on board. And as manufacturers heaped on features — almost every one terrific — the saws got heavier.
Then came the wheeled stands to make moving the now-heavy saws easier, and by 2006 a portable table saw was barely portable. I carried/rolled mine up three flights to a trim site, and it took everything I had. It barely fit through the stairway and around landings. Once on site (and I recovered from oxygen debt), it was way more saw than I needed. Grr-r-r-r.
