Gas heating and cooking are on their way out in some cities. For example, New York City has banned gas hookups for heat, hot water, and kitchen stoves in new construction starting 2024.
Natural gas hook ups in some new buildings have already been banned in other cities around the country, including San Francisco; San Jose, California; Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Seattle.

In the United States, fossil fuel combustion in buildings is responsible for about 13 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
But there’s good news from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: Carbon-free electricity from wind, solar, hydropower, and nuclear projects are now about 40 percent of the nation’s electricity supply.
