The hallmark of what building scientists call a water-managed wall system is that it does two things: First, it recognizes that all wall systems leak. Second, it is designed to let the water that does pass through the cladding drain out. Water managed wall systems work, according to building scientists, because they are flexible.
One of the great leak points in homes are window penetrations (duh). The key to keeping a window and the area around it from being destroyed by water (I won’t even talk about mold!) is to detail it so that any water that finds its way down to the sill area can be collected and drained out.
