Question: I want to hang a towel bar in my bathroom and have to drill through a tiled wall. I was going to just drill through the tile with a hammer drill, but I heard that you also need a scratch awl and tap. What are these tools and how do I use them?
Answer: First of all you heard right. And second of all, you just averted a small disaster by asking this question.
1. Even though tiles are hard like concrete and masonry, the last thing you want to do is use a drill with an impact mechanism like a hammer drill. Tile is too brittle and will probably break if you apply drilling pressure with a hammer drill.
2. However, you do want to use a masonry drill bit.
