Should we drop the ‘drop zone’ in the kitchen? Let’s talk.

The drop zone is a dreaded area for most every mom and designer. How do we deal with it? Join us.

Yes, you never know what you might find underneath clutter.

Enter kitchen. Drop keys.

Enter kitchen. Drop papers from school.

Enter kitchen. Drop lunchbox.

Enter kitchen. Stare at items that should be somewhere else.

Yes, the last person is anti-drop zone.

How do you know where your keys are? And phone? And tablet? And that bottle of vitamins you’re leaving out as a reminder to re-fill for liiiiiike 3-weeks?!?!?! Because you flung them on the counter like always.

Designers call it the drop zone. And we all have one. We need it. Unless you’re Batman or wear a tool pouch in your pajamas (don’t ask) you can’t carry everything. And when you’re lugging groceries you drop the keys before crushing the bananas.

So designers Stacy Garcia of @KBTribeChat and Lisa Smith @TheDecorGirl come to the rescue with new design strategies. First thing, says Lisa, is that if it’s not easy to use, it simply won’t get used. And Stacy finds new ways to get inventive, like converting refrigerator cabinets and end-panels into device-hiding, easy-access storage.

And both—in slightly different (but code-approved where each lives) ways—install ‘docking drawers’: Drawers with a GFCI plug in them so devices can not only store in a drawer, but can charge up out of site. Drop zone beware. Super hero designers are on to you.

We’re talking with kitchen and design experts– Stacy Garcia and Lisa Smith,  from the weekly Twitter chat #KBTribeChat about the drop zone.
