Fence-Post Footings

Question: I’m building a fence. I’m wondering if I have to pour concrete in the post hole. A carpenter buddy of mine says that he pours dry concrete in the bottom of the hole then, over time, ground water mixes with the dry powder and it hardens. What do you say?

Answer: First, you don’t have to pour concrete in the hole—mixed or dry—for a fence. Just dig deep enough and drop the post in.

However, if you want the posts to stand plumb (straight up and down) for any period of time, pour pre-mixed concrete in the hole around the base of the post to create a proper footing.
