How to find a contractor and get a good one, not just any one

There are two reasons my customers want to find a contractor like me: One, they want something done. Two, because they need something done. NOW.

Don’t just ‘find a contractor’ find the right contractor.

Whether it’s finishing a basement or clearing snow, stopping a leak or building a pergola, getting the right person—not just any person—has been the right formula for them. And for me.

As a contractor, I’m proud that much of my business has come by word of mouth. I also know that I can’t depend on every customer to find a contractor like me by knowing someone I know. Nor can I direct my business how I want it to grow.

For that I need to put myself in front of the customers who want to buy what I want to build.

Back when Abraham Lincoln was President, that could be done with ads in something called a ‘phone book’ (Google it).

But to find a contractor today (here’s a VIDEO with some tips) customers that I want to design and build for are using AppleTV and Amazon Echo and a whole bunch of other things I don’t spend that much time using—or even really totally understand. They’re talking to their TVs like Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise.

So my question as contractor, carpenter, and business owner is this: How do I get them to talk to me, instead of me depending on the somewhat accidental growth referrals bring? What if I want to build more decks? Or design / build for people with special needs like Alzheimer‘s? I have to be more targeted to build my own destiny.

But AppleTV and the tech required to manage it? Yeah, not happening for me. So what do I do? Sub it out:

HomeAdvisor’s Home Services Apps are the bridge, connecting analog me to the ‘Internet of things’—and the customers who use them like I use a nail gun. It’s hard to believe the world really this close to Star Trek, but it is. And I’m either in it. Or I’m not.

I don’t need to understand how it works, I need to work with someone who does. Like hiring a plumber. I can figure it out, but working with a specialist is faster and better every way you slice it. So to build my business the way I want to and help my new customers find a contractor they can trust—me—HomeAdvisor is a subcontractor I can trust.

And if you need your deck built or kitchen installed or handicap ramp done right, HomeAdvisor can be your bridge to my world of ladders and saws, shovels and mud. Energize!
