Home Fixers: How to cut drywall for electrical device boxes

Here’s a fast and accurate way to mark and cut drywall for electrical devices and other penetrations in drywall.

This project is a basement renovation, but this can be done on any number of projects from kitchen remodeling to renovating old houses.

The trick is pretty easy. On a scrap of drywall, I cut a knockout the same size as the device box. Since the electrician measured the box locations from the floor it should match every device box in the room.

I wish I had thought of this years ago.
