How to Check Roof Damage (And What To Do Next)

A roof is often an understated hero of a home. Not only does it protect you and your family from harsh weather and debris, but it also impacts the overall aesthetic. It’s essential to regularly check your roof, especially after a big storm. Even if you hire a pro to check roof damage, it’s important to know some early warning signs that your roof may need to be repaired or replaced so you can avoid the worst problems.

Why Check Your Roof?

1. Prevent Repairs

One of the main reasons to assess your roof regularly is to stay on top of any potential repairs brewing. Guttering can crack, shingles can fall off, and a whole manner of other damage can occur that compromises your home. Catching these issues early prevents them from later becoming catastrophic because when a storm hits, the weakest point is the most susceptible to damage.

2. Peace of Mind

Another clear reason to regularly check your roof is to ensure safety. Major structural damage can start as something minor, so as soon as you notice anything unusual, you’ll want to nip it in the bud right away. A roof collapse can result in not only serious damage to your property, but also the compromised safety of you and your family.

3. Extend the Life of Your Roof

Whether for safety reasons or simply for basic maintenance, paying close attention to your roof’s condition over time increases its longevity. Roofs are designed to last on average around 25 years before needing to be replaced, and by checking the condition and eliminating small problems as you go, you can make the most of their lifespan.

How to Check Your Roof

Checking your roof starts by walking around the perimeter of your home. Check for any visible damage along the edge of the roof and along the guttering, as well as any moss buildup or plant debris (these may be signs of leaks). You should also periodically check the attic for signs of water damage or mold.

If anything looks like it warrants a look, call a professional. If you don’t know a roofer, search the National Roofing Contractors Association website for a member near you.

What to Do if You Notice a Problem

A reputable roofing contractor, such as Rize Exteriors, for example, will be able to properly assess your roof for damage and inform you of the extent of the repairs required. They may be able to repair the problem or might offer you a full evaluation to see if you need a new roof installed (for very old or very damaged roofs, this is often recommended).

Check your roof over once a month. From the ground, zoom in with your camera. If you feel comfortable and safe on a ladder, climb up and take a look, especially after a big storm. If you notice anything amiss, be sure to rectify the issue promptly. Most problems will be minor, but again, they can easily turn into major issues if they’re left untreated.
