Following many years in storage, the Museum of Food and Drink in Manhattan is resurrecting the iconic Ebony magazine’s orange kitchen in an exhibit called African/American Making the Nation’s Table. In fact, the 1970s-era kitchen was original at Ebony’s offices in Chicago. After the publishing company building was sold, the Ebony kitchen was sold to a preservatio n nonprofit for $1 in 2019.
“Ebony was an iconic and world transforming magazine for many African Americans at the end of the 20th century,” the show’s curator Jessica Harris told Elle Decor magazine.
“Its ability to expand knowledge in the community and share everything from recipes to travel information remains unparalleled. And the kitchen is where those recipes started.”
