First: think about replacing the spark plug. Depending on the size of your lawn, your spark plug may last more than a season. So despite the conventional wisdom of annual replacement (which is a good benchmark, especially for ½ acre yards and up) your mower may fire right up and you don’t give it a second thought…
…until…the mower’s engine starts to cough, hiccup or stutter while you’re mowing — especially tall grass. The stutter-sputter is a pretty good sign that you should at least inspect the plug to see it’s clean. After removing the plug, if the threaded part is all blackened with carbon deposits, its time for a new one.
