Lexi’s Gardening Tips: Deadheading And Gardening

Hello! This is a follow-up blog to my planting flowers blog.

As winter comes, it was time to “deadhead” our cardinales plants in our backyard.

Let me explain to you what deadheading is. Deadheading is when you cut the tops of the flowers off right near the ground so they grow better the following year. It was a lot of work at first but then it was kind of fun once I knew where to cut. My hands sort of knew what to do after a while.

When I was done that, I planted the rest of our tulip bulbs in the same bed.

See, it’s best to plant them the same year you buy them because they may lose their nutrients over the winter and may not grow. The other reasons I planted the tulips now are (1) we have to use them up and (2) they grow in a different season than the cardinales. So, the tulips will bloom their firey colors in the spring and the cardinales will come in later in the summer.
