Lawn tractors and zero-turn mowers are generally set-up to side-discharge, which can be frustrating when it blows grass in flower beds and other places you don’t want the grass to go. But not all mowers are built alike. Here’s a question sent in about mulching grass.
Ask It: You mentioned a “mulch shield” on your Troy-Bilt Mustang mower review. Where can I find a mulch shield? The mulch plug I have doesn’t work. It keeps blowing off. –Boyce
Answer It: Hi Boyce. Sorry to hear the mulch cover you have is blowing off. The thing about mulch shields or mulch kits is that many are product-specific. They may even be specific to the particular model of mower you’re using.
So one size does NOT fit all.
You may want to check directly with Troy-Bilt to see which mulch kit/shield works with your mower. The cover I used for the Mustang review is a combination of shield and blades. Mulching blades are configured a little differently than conventional blades. They’re designed to keep the grass up in the mower deck longer. The result is that the grass is chopped into much smaller pieces for a cleaner mow and easier composting once they’re dropped back into the lawn.
