Why is MyFixitUpLife on Snapchat?

Snapchat isn’t just for millennials. Here’s why.

I used to have the reaction of other moms when I heard the word ‘Snapchat.’

“It’s fun.”

Yes, it’s fun to share silly photos and videos with friends. But, for an app that is based on sharing disappearing images and videos, there’s an unreal expectation of being inside a safe cocoon. While tweens, teens, and 20-somethings know that it’s easy to save those fleeting images, they also are quick to point out that it’s ‘not my friends’ who do that. (Insert eyebrow raise.)

While millennials share images with their parents on Snapchat, they are skeptical of any other ‘over 35-year-olds’ on Snapchat. Like those other GenXers are creeping. And maybe some are creeping. We’ve received a few unsavory snaps, but I think that’s just part of the world of social networking. We’ve received tweets, facebook comments, and emails that could be equally considered unsavory. That’s the hook when it comes to connecting with potentially everyone. Nothing is perfect.

But Snapchat might just a be a perfect way to connect with tomorrow’s homeowners and apartment renters who will be looking for quick fix and DIY advice. Snapchat is also used by about half of those between 18 and 24. And Snapchatters are sharing 700 million photos daily. It was the second most downloaded app of 2014. Those are serious stats.

With brands like CNN, People, Food Network, and ESPN sharing temporary videos and images on Snapchat, they’ve added a bit of business and street cred to Snapchat. While that’s interesting to us ‘older’ GenXers, it might just be the part of the social network that pushes millennials into an entirely new social network. We’ll have to wait and see.

We’re sharing raw images and videos of what we really do everyday at MyFixitUpLife. Head over to Snapchat and let’s be friends. We’d love to see your story.
