A new roof is a major decision.
And for good reason. It is not an inexpensive home improvement and it’s not a DIY project.
So, just like upgrading any of the workhorses in your home, like the plumbing, electrical or HVAC, a new roof is something to spend time considering and making sure you pick a roof material that will be as efficient and long-lasting as you can afford.
Before you call a professional for advice, there are a few simple things you can check without climbing a ladder to see if your roof needs to be replaced. Are pieces of your roof in the yard after a storm? Do the shingles look worn? Do you see discoloration? Is your attic dry? And how long has your roof been serving your home?
Unlike the other workhorses of your home, your home’s roof also is a big opportunity to make a statement with color and texture. So if you are considering a new roof, take the time to look at the options. There are a world of color, material and textures available.
For us, our priorities were how the roof material withstands weather, its UV resistance, and a long warranty. And then we considered the colors and styles in the neighborhood, the style of our home, and our home’s fixed features before we selected a new roof for our 110+ year-old home.
But the most important reason to make sure our roof is doing its job is for peace of mind for our family.
