How to pamper your dog. (Yes, this is real.)

Do you need to pamper your dog with a dog spa? Do we really need to share a day of beauty with our pets?

I’m not so sure. For all of us who love our pets as part of our families, we can be found guilty of frequently indulging them with little treats and extra attention. But, I’m curious how the habits of doting on a dog or cat turns into a full-on pet spa day with facials.

While I can see that it may be fun to give your pet a facial, or a vibrating bed, or a pint of pet-friendly ice cream, when I step back and see the entire picture, it looks odd. Have we lost so much connection with other humans that we are now prone to replace those connections with our pets? We once thought a dog was safe and cozy with a comfortable bed, a bone, and a dog fence, but we assume their tastes have become more refined!

So how are people pampering pets?

Whether or not we care for our pets as a way to connect to other living creatures, replacing human connections, these pamper your pet strategies seem like good ways to care for our human selves.

Massage bed for dogs

A massage bed sounds nice, especially for an older dog or an ill pet who has joint pain or other aches. Puppies may even enjoy the soothing nature of a massaging bed for naps. Taken as just a therapy bed, it seems sane to get this for a pet.

However, the company offers three options of massage based on your pet’s preferences. One level can wake up the dog to a morning massage. Another is for exercise recovery. The third option is for an evening wind down massage to help your pet get a better night’s sleep. With 1/3 of human Americans not getting enough sleep, this seems like a solution that pet parents should be using, too.

Facials for dogs

Facials are nice. While the different kinds of facial treatments can be for so many different reasons and with a range of ingredients, the time spent nurturing our faces just feels good. It’s nice to take a break and indulge in some self-care time.

I didn’t realize that pets could feel the same way.

Do they like facials? I can’t imagine trying to get my cats to sit and patiently let me do a sugar scrub or avocado mask on them. They would be running away, hiding, and licking off the goo before I’d be able to apply much to their little furry faces. Dogs may be more patient, but it still seems odd to pamper your dog with a facial.

But, I spied a blog on Chewy about bonding with your pet by doing a blueberry facial together. While blueberries are safe for dogs and cats, I’m not so sure about bonding through facials. If you are into trying this, we won’t judge. You care for your pets the way you want. The recipe includes blueberries, coconut oil, organic honey, and sugar. It sounds delicious, and they claim that you and your dog will have softer skin, or fur, afterward.

After a dog spa with a nice massage and a facial, it’s time for a treat. Many of us humans may usually opt for a refreshing cucumber- or orange-infused water or sparkling wine, but ice cream can hit the yummy spot, too.

To help top off your pampering spa day with your dog, Ben & Jerry’s is making ice cream treats for dogs. When I first saw this, I thought it was a joke. But, it’s real.

The ingredients are similar to the versions made for humans, except that a sunflower butter base is used instead of dairy. This is supposed to make it gentler on dog tummies.

“Ben & Jerry’s Doggie Desserts are the perfect frozen dog treat for your beloved pup! Just like you love Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, your dog will love Doggie Desserts.”
