Did You Know?
Designer Sheila Bridges created a version of toile, called Harlem toile de Jouy. She says it “lampoons some of the stereotypes deeply woven into the African American experience.”
The iconic toile de Jouy fabric is known for its romantic pastoral scenes and charming storytelling. In addition, it was much loved by Marie Antoinette and Josephine Bonaparte and became popular in the 1700s.
In fact, the wall covering has been featured in The Studio Museum In Harlem, The Cooper Hewitt Museum, The Museum of Art and Design in New York City, and the Musée De La Toile De Jouy in France. Available for $300 a roll, Harlem Toile umbrellas, scarves, clothing, dishware, and totes are also available.
