Pre-treating Pressure-Treated Wood

Question: I’m planning to build a pergola. I’ve heard that you’re supposed to stain the end-grain of the wood to maximize its life. I’m building with pressure-treated lumber. Do I still need to stain the ends of the lumber?

Answer: You’re on the right track. First, pressure-treated Southern pine (which we’re building a play-set out of) is a great choice for this project. You need to treat (it is a building code requirement) the cut-ends and bores, however, stain is not the right product. What you want to use is a product called Copper Napthalene.
