Take a hike this holiday, and make a quickie bow and arrow with your family. Nancye Good shows us how. And these are super safe arrows, too.

I never thought I’d make a bow-and-arrow. Yes, I’m one of the vegans who cringes at the thought of anyone or anything getting hurt, embarrassed or unhappy. I’m a super-sensitive ‘princess-and-the-pea’ type. My favorite movie is Mary Poppins, which I’ve watched every birthday, for 25 years. There’s a lot to be said about that ‘spoon full of sugar,’ and ‘well begun is half done’ philosophy.

But I took a left turn in my thoughts.

I loved making this project with Nancye from Earth Living Skills. She showed me the steps, and I made my first quickie bow-and-arrow in less than 30 minutes, live on blab.im. I hope you’ll gather up the materials and watch how we made this DIY project.

And then head outside to shoot those super safe arrows, and try to see which member of your family is the most accurate at hitting that tree.

Quickie bows supplies:

  • a green stick
  • oak or maple about as thick as your index finger and as long as your arm
  • a whittling knife (or a snap-off utility knife)
  • some artificial sinew (available at craft stores)
  • another straight stick to make an arrow
  • foam for the arrowhead
  • duct tape to attach the foam

About Nancye & Easth Living Skills: Nancye Good spent her childhood roaming the forests and beaches of beautiful Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest. Raising two children in New York City, Nancye realized how difficult is is for city kids to have that nature immersion experience she enjoyed as a child. In 2008 Nancye attended Coyote Tracks summer camp with her family and she was deeply re-connected and re-awakened to nature. Nancye greatly appreciates the enthusiasm and passion of all of the children and families she has shared the skills with, and treasures what she has learned from them.  Nancye is a certified Wilderness First Responder.

Earth Living Skills enable a person to live in nature without any special equipment; your own knowledge and skills are all you need. Our classes and programs will give your kids the skills to survive out in the wild. We are reconnecting people to nature, and reawakening their primitive instincts.

I made my first quickie bow and arrow. And it has a foam arrowhead, because it’s also a safe arrow. Perfect for me.

Supplies to make a quickie bow-and-arrow are few. I didn’t use the paper cone, shown here, but I had it on hand in case I had trouble forming the arrowhead. Nancye made it so easy.
