We’re talking with DecorGirl Lisa Smith about her roof garden to find out the real-deal of putting a garden on top of your house. She blogged about it, Theresa found it, and we just had to know.
It’s a totally ‘out there’ way to keep the rain out of your house, add color, add texture and, as Lisa puts it, it’s just cool and she had to do it. But you can’t just throw a roof garden up on your house.
While it’s a great design aspect, it’s also heavy. Work with pros who know, from local growers who can grow the plants to a contractor who can design it and install it right. Does Lisa have to mow her roof? We find out. It looks good four seasons. And even occasional weeding—her husband does it, c’mon—doesn’t clip off the cool factor. One other thing we know for sure, there are no deer eating those plants!

The romance and earth-friendly appeal of a roof garden can bump up against practicality of installation, maintenance, and those little surprises that we haven’t yet thought of yet.
So, when we saw a blog post about living with a roof garden, we were hooked. We’ve always been fascinated by garden roofs, and had to know more.
And enjoyed talking with the blogger Lisa, who is an interior designer and artist who shares the real world of interior design on her blog DecorGirl.net.
“A roof with living plants does require weeding about once or twice a season, because birds like to “drop” seeds of unintended plants. A once a year sprinkle with season long fertilizer helps to keep the plants looking luscious.” –Lisa, DecorGirl
