Segmented Arch

So here’s one for the died-in-the-wool architecture aficionado. If someone were to ask you what shape is shown in both of these photos, what would you answer?

I know that I would have given two different replies. For photo # 1 one it would be “arch” and for photo # 2 it would be “arc.”

For photo # 1 I would have been half-right. Yes, it is an arch, but it is a certain kind of arch. Photo # 2 is the same shape as photo # 1, only bigger.

See it yet?

Both arches shown here (they’re from Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas) are a “segmented arch.” This means that were the line of the arch to continue it would form a perfect circle.
