Turns out one of my favorite things to do with many of my drill bits is, interestingly, NOT to drill holes. Rather I have become mightily adept at hitting screws or nails I’ve already driven into the material and forgotten about. I’ve done this drilling bolt holes building cantilever beams on deck frames, assembling pergola girders, and most recently building the MyFixitUpLife FreeStuff backyard play-set (aka yard castle, aka taj ma play-set).
Not only does hitting the tip of a nail or screw cripple the cutting edge of the bit, progress is either slowed or stopped altogether.
The obvious solution I would call a Groucho Marx. “Hey Doc, it hyurtz when I do this.” Replies the doctor: “Well don’t do that.”
