FixitUp Find: Sill-Rite—A Good Sill-ution

So a homeowner calls you and asks you why the windows in his new (and expensive) home don’t have any trim like the house he grew up in.

You tell him that he probably has drywall returns and that, while he may find them boring, they are a common cost-saving move builders use.

He, in fact, does find them boring and asks if there’s anything you can do about it.

Your answer is (and I already know what you’re thinking: 1-by, on-site routing, caulking, and painting): “Sure.” You can make any window look good; it’s just a matter of time and expense. After you hang up the phone, you probably think that the carpentry will be fun, but all the stock you install has to have nail holes filled and sanded, be caulked, primed and painted. That’s probably when you wish you worked in an older neighborhood or just stayed on the framing crew for the rest of your career.
