Glamourized. A small bathroom makeover for my mom.

From whimsical wildlife to ultra calm sleek, this small bathroom mini makeover was a treat.

This is the after for my mom’s small bathroom makeover. It’s simple and calm, exactly what she wanted.  (I’d like to talk her into staining the wood ebony or darkest blue… For next time.)

 

My mom has never been a ‘shopper.’

And I am not exaggerating when she groans with my sister whenever the idea of shopping pops up as something to do. They shop to buy when there is a specific need. There isn’t the curiosity of what might be trending in stores or what other people are wearing and buying for their homes.

Let me share some background. As a kid, I wore hand-me-downs, passed to me from my sister and the daughters of my mom’s friends. I never actually did any back-to-school shopping. And when I was allowed to pick out bedroom furniture, and nix all of the hand-me-downs I was using, I was a giddy 8-year-old. I shopped the store, not just the girl’s bedroom sets. I pulled from dining room displays and living room displays. The salesperson didn’t know what to make of me.

As a total design geek, I’m as happy as kid presented with a pile of birthday cake when I can squeeze time to shop fashion, furnishings, or anything else.

So when my mom mentioned she wanted to update her small bathroom with a new look, I sped down to her home. Within a week of the mention, the bathroom was painted and donned new necessities. From shopping to clean-up, it took about about 8 hours to complete.

My mom’s bathroom mini makeover took the look from a pretty shade of yellow and butterfly theme to shades of grey and touches of sparkle.

She wanted a calm room, without the pop of contrasting or accent colors. Since she isn’t a happy shopper, I had to be strategic. The first step was selecting a shower curtain, because it’s a small space and it would set the color palette and tone of the bathroom. She had no preconceived idea of color or what she was looking for, and I was hoping she would react to something she saw in the store.

Thank goodness she did.

We then browsed quickly, and decided to add some sparkle and shine to give the small bathroom a more sophisticated feel. And selected a darker shade of grey bathmat to add texture.

Immediately we went to the local Sherwin-Williams paint store. After considering shades of grey with purple, green, and brown undertones, we picked the colors: Snowfall and Grayish.

It’s simple, calm, and minimal. Exactly what she mentioned she wanted last week. And it was s treat to share my love of design and DIY with my mom for a day.

My mom’s bathroom had a collection of wall art themed for the butterfly bathroom. We set out to find new homes for the art.
So when my mom said she wanted to update her small bathroom, I packed my essentials to help her with the makeover.
Birds were also represented in the whimsical animal bathroom. We found the birds a home near the sunroom.
After painting, decreasing the visual noise of wall art and counter items, the small bathroom looks more like a hotel bathroom than a kid’s bathroom.
Even though my mom wanted a very gentle color palette in her small bathroom, I talked her into a textured rug in a darker shade. It grounds the space.
After selecting the shower curtain, we immediately searched for bathroom accessories in the same color palette, but with a little bit of shimmer. Thank you HomeGoods.
Even though she was ready to say goodbye to the butterfly shower curtain, my mom selected a graphic organic print, that’s sort of a sophisticated version of the butterflies.
