Stepping up into style with our new entry door

It’s been a long husband-and-wife discussion. And I don’t just mean hours. I mean 7 years.

Mark and I have not agreed on our front door since we moved in. Our home is a 100+ year-old American Foursquare, and the door was original to the home. It is a paneled 3/4-lite paneled wood door with a charming mail slot. And it’s that mail slot that stole my heart.

It’s the wind tunnel that stole Mark’s more practical mind into chipping away at my fondness for the door. And with the renovation of our home finally entering into the front room of our home, it was time to make a practical decision about the energy efficiency of the home and, well, the wind tunnel that Mark likes to call the entryway.

To be fair, we can see light under and over the door opening, when the door is closed. And no matter how hard Mark worked to try to seal the door from the elements, it still was breezy.

So I gave in. And since we are replacing the door, we might as well get the most energy efficient door we can find. We’ve walked through the entire decision-making process for about 6 months. Yes, it’s a long path, but an entry door makes a statement to everyone who visits. I used My Saved Doors on Therma-Tru’s website to ‘try-on’ different styles and share them with Mark. And we’ve finally settled on the Canvas Classic-Craft in Loch Blue.

Just to be sure the color would blend with the roof, windows, and stucco color, I spent some time talking over the color with Kate Smith, who is a color expert. She said she would have picked the same. (Relief!)

We’ll be sharing the details of the door replacement, and the renovation of our front room later on this year. I can’t wait.
