Question: I’m in the market for a new home. I’m not a professional, but I am handy. I want to buy a fixer-upper but I don’t want to get in over my head. I’m afraid of hidden problems that a typical home inspecti0n won’t uncover. Also, I really don’t want to just slap this together. I will sell this place some day (and in this market, doing so at a profit means no time soon) so I want to do work that’ll last. Any ideas?
Answer: Yes, lots of them. First, though, is praise for you. You are asking wise questions, both from a pocketbook standpoint and from a craft standpoint. It’s clear that not only are you wary enough to protect yourself from being burned business-wise, you respect that a house and its systems are a little more than just a weekend plaything. Kudos.
