This Weighted Comforter Delivers a Better Night’s Rest

While bedding isn’t going to complete your chore list or work assignments and it can’t create extra hours in every day, linens like high-quality sheets, cooling pillowcases, soft-to-the-touch blankets, and weighted comforters can affect how we sleep once we find the time to climb into bed.

Why did we choose a weighted comforter?

We’ve married more than 15 years, and needed a bed upgrade. Since we’re both frugal at heart, are blessed with a weakness for vintage and salvage, and have a need to make-do with what we have by fixing or improving, it’s a tough sell for us to part with money to buy anything new.

But, we decided it was time to swap out the old bed and try a pillow-top version in our primary bedroom. I had patched the bedroom walls during the pandemic, and had left them patched. A sad array of joint compound spots adorned the walls. And we faced the old bed and sad walls every night and morning. Not the best way to start and end a day.

As luck would have it, KILZ asked us to share painting tips. So I had extra motivation to finally try out a sheen-on-sheen painting idea to create luxe stripes in a moody sophisticated color. And, Eli & Elm asked if we wanted to test drive their new weighted comforter. Of course, we said yes!

What is the Eli & Elm weighted comforter?

The weighted comforter is made from 100 percent cotton and is weighted with micro glass beads, which is one of the reasons why I said yes. I am allergic to a lot of things, and I’m concerned about my family’s overall health. So I try to keep our furnishings and possessions as natural as possible around our home.

It has a 300-thread count and duvet loops on the corners that can be used to attach it to another bed cover. It’s available in Twin, Queen, and King sizes.

What do we think of the comforter?

After using it for a few months, we are very happy to say that we are sleeping better than ever. In the grand scheme of life, better sleep is on par with more time and better health. Because, better sleep makes us more efficient throughout the day and feel healthier all day long.

While I’ve never been a fan of a weighted blanket, and I’ve tried a few, my husband Mark is a HUGE fan. He also likes the feeling of a blood pressure cuff, a sauna, and intense massages. I’ll pass on all of those. Yes, I was a little bit skeptical about using this weighted comforter. But, marriage is about compromise and trying what the other person wants. Unlike other weighted blankets that I’ve tried, this Eli & Elm weighted comforter doesn’t feel suffocating. There’s just enough weight that it takes effort to pull up and move around on the bed, but not so much that my low blood pressure feels like it’s dipping. It’s actually a comforting comforter.

And I like the simple window-pane sewing pattern on the exterior, too.

Why choose a weighted comforter?

Weighted comforters can help produce better quality sleep, and there’s some science behind that. The pressure that is felt help release dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Those feel-good chemicals support falling asleep faster and they can actually help sleepers stay asleep longer than without the weight.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine published a study that revealed that weighted blanket sleepers were 26 times more likely to have a half as much insomnia and 20 times more likely to reach insomnia remission. Researchers in Sweden also have found that weighted blankets also help increase the production of melatonin, which is an important hormone that regulates sleep.
