‘Textured drywall’ is a finish sprayed on to regular drywall boards during construction. It’s joint compound, but instead of a smooth finish, it’s left as ‘orange peel’ or ‘knock down’.

Orange peel is the spray-on compound left to dry as is. Once dry, it’s said to resemble an orange rind. I’m not sure it does, but if your drywall has lots of little bumps and dimples, then it’s orange peel.

Knock-down is an orange peel finish that is allowed to dry for a time, then wiped with a drywall knife. This ‘knocks down’ or flattens the tops of the bumps to give a different look.
