Want to rescue your lawn this fall? Here’s how

Autumn is the ideal time to repair your lawn and ensure that grass is healthy when springtime comes around.

Want a green, healthy lawn next season? Get your grass in the game this fall. The season is an opportune time to get new seeds in the ground and growing before winter comes and we’re talking about snow shovels. Grass in much of the U.S. is a cool-season plant. It likes dewy mornings, warm days, lots of sun, and cool nights. So the autumn dew does a lot of your watering for you.

For many lawns I’ve repaired and rescued, getting grass to take in the fall is the weed-beating lifeblood of next year’s healthy turf. But though fall hands us primo conditions for getting the new seed to take, it’s not enough for many lawns. To give my grass the best chance to be a weed-beater, I prepare it by thatching, core aerating, and mowing before dropping new seed.
