Love enjoying the rows of crayons every time I open and shut the front door.

After pinning fun crafty ideas for back-to-school decorations on Pinterest, I was inspired to create a look for our front door. And I challenged myself to use traditional back-to-school supplies and not to make a wreath.

Both seem like easy challenges, but I’ve been obsessed with making door wreaths for the holidays over the past few years, and it’s a hard habit to break. So after buying several packs of crayons, I played with the shapes for a while.

The process of inspiration and playing with objects to see what kinds of shapes can be created is some of the most fun parts of a crafternoon. But after thinking about standing the crayons up on end, and cutting them to make a schoolhouse shape with ruler roofs, I landed on an essential that I wanted to be part of this project. The essential of this crayon art is that I wanted to be able to use the crayons later, as they were intended to color.

So I picked up some repositionable Glue Dots and cut a board to length as a backer. And positioned the crayons on the board.

Crayon art caution: While the crayon art is perfect for our cooler August days this summer, I’m keeping an eye on the thermometer each day to make sure our crayons don’t start to drip in the sun.

I decided to use Glue Dots for this project, so that the crayons would stick but would be easy to remove when we’re ready for Halloween decor.

Note: Whenever making new art for an entry door, make sure you have a hanger or something else that doesn’t puncture the door. You could void the warranty. (Check out this interview with ideas on how to hang door decorations with a Therma-Tru Doors expert.)
