How to build a grill platform

We made a mini-deck and a wood platform for our new grill.

No deck, no patio? No problem. Make a grill platform. We did.

Our old grill was no longer working, and it had sunk into the ground. It made Mark sad to see the grill in such a sorry state.

Since Mark likes to grill all-year-round, even in the snow, we needed to replace the broken grill. But before we put the grill in place, we needed another solution to the sinking problem.

We don’t have a deck or patio, where most everyone typically places a grill. Our 100+-year-old home has a front and back porch. Both wouldn’t be ideal or safe places for a grill. So Mark came up with the idea to build a mini deck just for the new grill.

We chose Western Red Cedar for the grill platform, since the wood will be in ground contact and we love working with cedar. It smells so good while cutting it, and it lasts, too.

This video shows the step-by-step how to of our project. It’s basically the same steps as building a ground-level deck, just smaller. The how-to can be expanded for an even larger area, if you are interested in having a dining spot with the grill. And our grill has a level grilling surface that fits in beautifully in our backyard.

Have you made a special area for your grill? We’d love to know about it.
