How to get and keep green grass this spring

Four steps to green grass

Want 4-steps for green grass that you can make happen in a weekend? You got it.

Four steps to green grass
Four steps to green grass: Thatch, aerate, seed water. OK, five: Love.

And even though it helps (it always helps) you don’t have to be a fescue fanatic to green grass it, this 4-step green grass shuffle is pretty easy.

-Thatch. Organic matter like leaves and un-mulched grass create a net around the base of the grass plant inhibiting nutrients and air access to the roots of the plant. Loosen thatch’s stranglehold with a lawn tractor and thatcher attachment.

-Mow. For severely thatch-choked lawns I take several passes with a tow-behind thatcher attachment. Or, for weeds, a power-rake (I rent this) can pulverize weeds. Either way, after you pull up the dead stuff, mow it or blow it off the lawn.

-Plug. If you’re Captain Lawn Tractor, not only do I envy you, but you can swap out the thatcher for an aerator and start plugging holes in the lawn. This helps air get to the roots and creates places for seeds to catch when you…

-Seed. Sow a regionally appropriate seed that also works for your light conditions. Adding a starter fertilizer can’t hurt but isn’t necessary (at least where we live).

-Agua. Spray gently to soften the soil so the seed ‘sets’ rather than runs off. Then, water generously. Twenty-minutes in the morning or evening when it is coolest usually works best. Water until the seed germinates and is established.

This is a great and pretty easy DIY project. If you aren’t Captain Lawn Tractor, renting thatchers and aerators from your local rental yard for ½ and full days is fairly easy. If you’re hiring a landscaper for this project, the cost for your green grass depends on the size of your yard.

Once the lawn is up, let it grow. For more projects like this or to connect with a contractor, visit HomeAdvisor.
