Hanging planters started to remind me of witch hats, so I acted on that idea. Why not?
I may have an addiction.
It’s an addiction to ideas. As a designer, color expert, and all-around artist-maker, I see things in an odd way. A chair doesn’t have to be a chair. It could be a side table. A dresser can be a bench. And a hanging planter can be a Halloween decoration.
The planters on our front porch have three chains that connect to a wire basket. So the chains create an outline of a cone. And the basket is round, so to me, I saw a little witch head underneath a tall black hat.
I walked to the drugstore down the street, bought 3 sheets of black poster board, and gathered a few other supplies from my workshop. Here’s the list:
3 sheets of poster board
2 rolls of black Gorilla Tape
3 wooden bowls from IKEA
copper wire
green Krylon spray paint
Sharpie markers in black and red
After removing the original basket from the hooks of the planter chains, I drilled three holes in the bowls and attached the chains to the wood bowls. Now that I have the shape created, I can wrap the poster board around the cone-shape that the chains created. I put a piece of tape on the seam to hold it in place. Then I slide the poster board off the chains so that I can cut the bottom of the cone so it lays flatter.
Using the scrap from cutting the cone out of the poster board, I made the brim of the hat and punctured three holes so the chains could slide through the circle and connect to the wood bowls.
Since I want these hats to live outside, I chose to cover the hats in black Gorilla Tape.
The wood bowls got a few quick coats of green spray paint.
And then I drew a fun little mouth on each of the three bowls.
The last step is attaching the bowl heads to the witch hats. And they are hanging on our front porch, ready for the trick-or-treaters and Halloween.
