Hats at the Kentucky Derby

While fancy hats have been associated with Great Britain’s grand events for a long time, the extra extravagant hats didn’t really make a splash at the Kentucky Derby until the 1960s, according to the Kentucky Derby. Why? They say it was the introduction of television cameras that prompted women to don stand-out hats. Today, it’s become a bit of an iconic element of the horse racing day.

Advice from the Derby: “Not all of us can wear every type of hat. So when choosing the perfect hat, consider your physique. If you are on the shorter side, it is best to not choose a super large brim because it will tend to swallow you. Instead, go with a fascinator with some height, or a smaller brim.”

Hats at the Coronation

For those of us waking up early on Coronation Day to sleepily watch from our sofas while sipping coffee, a grand hat can help make us feel like we’re part of the party. And wearing a fancy hat at 5am on a Saturday morning is completely sane, said no one.

Special occasions in British society are known for hats. In fact, the roots developed more from decorum and utility than just standing out at a horse race on TV (we are so very American, aren’t we?). Royal women and upperclass women did not show their hair in public until about 1950s. Therefore, hats were crucial parts of a public ensemble.
