When I see a 4×4 porch post outside, a lally column in a basement, or a living room desperate to be divided into a cozier dining room and parlor, I think two things: First, each of these is an ideal location for a decorative column. Second, decorative columns can be tough and time consuming to fabricate and install.
And you know the kind I’m talking about: Craftsman style with a taper or columns with raised panels—or both. It is an art to be sure but it is also time-consuming and expensive for the customer.
Fypon’s cellular PVC column wraps outsmarts this challenge making adding and installing beautiful architectural detail to a plain wrapper structural post fast for homeowner and contractor—without skimping on quality workmanship or durability.
The trick—borrowed from any good trim carpenter’s handbook—is that Fypon makes their column wraps in two pieces so, just as the name says, you literally wrap the column with it. What’s more, however (and I like this detail) the wrap itself is isolated from the column. While this may seem like an insignificant detail, it’s really important. Structural posts—especially pressure treated lumber—are often installed with a very high moisture content and as they dry and shrink they can twist, check and move. And this can telegraph through into trim details opening miters and seems.
And to really geek-out on this, it also allows you to line the columns up even if the structural columns are a little off layout.
