FixitUp Find: Dunham Crew Chief Boots

Good boots are an expensive but undeniably important tool, and good ones help us do our jobs more comfortably.

If your boots date back into the last decade or look like they can walk away by themselves, it might be time to, as we say in estimates, “remove and replace.”

I’ve been wearing the new Crew Chief boots by Dunham lately, and I like them. With Abzorb shock-absorbing, thoughtfully designed uppers, the Crew Chiefs are comfortable for standing at the miter saw all day, out on site digging holes, and running up and down stairs. At 8 inches high with a custom cuff collar, they don’t easily fill with dirt or pebbles, making me aware that there’s a lot of truth to the saying “about as fun as a rock in your shoe” as I recall older boots that let that happen. They’re comfortable even in all day haulin’ and installin’ mode. (This probably shouldn’t surprise me, though; Dunham is a brand of the running-shoe maker New Balance.) The sole is nice and grippy on all manners of surfaces (I haven’t worn them on a roof yet, but I suspect they’ll be fine), and they’re waterproof, which I need because it takes a deluge to make me go home. The boot also features Thinsulate for warmth in cold weather.
